Berserker (Messenger Book 2) Page 43
“With your powers, you'd be a little more than that,” Cena said. “And obviously we couldn't advertise your presence on the force. You'd be working behind the scenes to suppress criminals and terrorists who try to wreck the new order we're creating. I won't lie to you, Blondie. It would be a dangerous, thankless job. No one would even know that you were putting your life in danger to keep them safe. But as a warrior type Messenger, I think you were born for it.”
Sacrificing myself to protect the very same people I tried to destroy, Janice thought. There could hardly be a more appropriate atonement than that.
“I see,” she whispered. “So that's your answer.”
With a shuddering breath, she reached out and wrapped her fingers around her staff. She pulled it out of its case, held it in front of her, and regarded it with a melancholy gaze. The others smiled at her in satisfaction, then turned and started down the far side of the hill. Vic looked over his shoulder and gestured at Janice to follow. As she jogged after them, she saw an aerial transport sitting behind the hill.
“Where are we going?” she asked.
“To where you can become what you were truly meant to be,” Vic answered. “A guardian of the renewal.”
